Every astrologer who works with reincarnation themes checks a short list of chart points. The list below is that list, in the order of weight most practitioners give it. The second half of this page covers what the indicator approach misses, and the chart that was designed to read the soul directly.
- South Node
- The strongest single indicator. Its sign and house describe what you arrive already knowing: the mastered pattern, comfortable and limiting at once.
- North Node
- The counterpart and the cure: the direction of growth this lifetime. The whole draconic chart is anchored to it.
- 12th house
- Planets here work behind the scenes of the personality. Traditions read them as inheritances, things finished or unfinished before this life.
- Retrogrades
- A retrograde planet revisits its own theme. Several retrogrades suggest a chart under heavy revision.
- Chiron
- A wound older than its biography, and the slow competence that grows from tending it.
- Saturn
- Hard Saturn aspects mark a lesson that repeats until it lands. Saturn contacts in synastry carry the same weight between people.
- 8th house Sun or Moon
- Read by many as the mark of an old soul: a life oriented to depth, loss, and regeneration from the start.
Start with the node axis
If you check one thing, check the nodes. They are a single axis: the South Node holds the accumulated past, the North Node names the direction that grows you. A South Node in Capricorn with the North in Cancer reads as a soul practiced in duty and control, learning to receive care. The signs give the theme; the houses give the arena where it plays out.
Find yours below. The calculator shows both nodes and what your North Node sign asks of you, in María Blaquier's words.

The limit of the checklist, and what replaces it
Indicators are fragments. A South Node here, a 12th house planet there, and the reading becomes a guessing game about how the pieces connect. Draconic astrology solves the connection problem by redrawing the entire chart from the North Node: every planet gets a soul-level sign, coherent with all the others, because they all share the same anchor.
The draconic chart does what the checklist cannot: it shows the past-life layer as one organized picture instead of scattered clues.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the strongest past life indicator in a chart?
- The South Node, by wide agreement. Its sign and house describe the pattern you arrived with. The draconic chart then expands that single point into a full chart.
- Are retrograde planets really about past lives?
- Astrologers read them as themes under revision, work being done a second time. Treat that as symbol rather than evidence; the usefulness is in naming the repetition.
- What does a packed 12th house mean?
- Several planets in the 12th put major parts of the personality behind the curtain: motivations that act on you before you see them. Karmic readings treat them as carried over.
- Do these indicators require an exact birth time?
- Houses do, so the 12th and 8th house indicators need a real time. The nodes, retrogrades, and Chiron read fine from the birth date alone.
